In a Houston control room, a robot controlled by an artificial intelligence program took over a drilling rig in a North Dakota oil field, replacing the human operator. The AI program, developed by Corva LLC, was able to make instantaneous decisions to drill through rock as efficiently as possible, transmitting instructions via satellite to the Nabors Industries Ltd. rig. Guedes, the director of performance tools at the company, estimates the program from Corva LLC will save the human operator about 5,000 commands while drilling the well and increase the speed by at least 30%.
